Permission and approval

Human Tissue Act

The Human Tissue Authority (HTA) is the regulatory and licensing body responsible for licensing and inspecting organisations that store and use human tissue for purposes including research.  If you will be using human tissue as part of your research, you need to check whether your organisation has such as a licence or whether it will be necessary for the organisation to make an application to the Human Tissue Authority.  The HTA also publish a list of organisations licensed to use human tissue for research purposes.

The HTA also publish detailed guidance and Codes of Conduct on the use of human tissue for different purposes, in line with relevant legislation.  If this applies to your research, we recommend you read, in particular, the Code of Conduct for Research.  We would also advise that you check if any other of the codes are relevant to your work, by reading the overview on their website.
